Tidal Rage 2011: Success and Zingers
Tidal Rage 2011 was a success! And came with zingers – lessons learned.
Even with a full time job – Bruno (the creative brain and initiator of this fundraiser) managed to inspire the VERA community, silkscreen community, the Surfrider Foundation, the NW surfing community, local visual artists, as well as friends and family to take part.
♥Popular local punk/hardcore bands Smooth Sailing, Great Falls, Android Hero and Monogamy Party gave their time and talent
♥The local VERA silkscreen community gave their time and efforts months in advance to create a larger than life poster concept
♥Talented local artists submitted gorgeous beach & ocean inspired photos, sculptures and painting
♥Lighting design by Independence Printage effected an “under the sea” phenomena in the lobby and gallery
♥The VERA staff assigned volunteers to work the ticket desk, concessions and to assist throughout the evening
♥Surfrider Foundation was responsive, connected and donated materials
♥Surf Ballard and NW Surf Academy, Mariners (thank you Dave Meligro), MikoJoJo Apparel and others donated auction items
♥Friends made cupcakes, donated auction items and braved the traffic to be part of the evening
Inspiration leads conversations leads communities leads more inspiration…
The major MAJOR glitch of the evening had to do with SeaFair and the SeaFair Parade. The 2011 parade date had been changed – and the route ran straight through (literally) our venue at Seattle Center – so on the evening of the 30th…major city roads were blocked off, cars could not park, cars could not move through side streets, crazy characters, marching bands, people in costumes, people everywhere…and VERA was dead center of all the commotion. What a mess. ♠ Know what’s going on in the city! Check and re-check traffic and alternate event conflicts! Provide all sorts of maps and remove as many obstacles for attendees as possible! ♠
Not only was attendance affected, but we received phone calls from people en route: Hey! I don’t see the VERA address on the Facebook Page! Where are you? How do I get there? While the address was on the page tucked under “info”, it wasn’t front and center, loud and clear! ♠ Never assume people will know how to get to the venue, everyone’s coming from different worlds, so be unmistakable in delivering the essentials! Address, Phone, Date, Time (sheesh) ♠
SUM IT: Beauty is everywhere, especially in the lessons. Tidal Rage 2012, watch out!
